I agree with The Witzer. The way the plane is set up on the plans makes the tail very heavy and set up at the field a pain. I plan to keep the booms connected and disconnect the outer wings for transport.
I ordered the fiberglass parts from Fiberglass Specialties about a year ago. Nice and will save a lot of weight and a whole lot of work. Currently plan to use a couple of 48 gold head K&B's.
May convert to electric but everything I currently have is old glow, slow to change.
There is plenty of room for a bigger setup in the fiberglass cowls.
I got the kit partially built and have done a lot of rework to lighten it up. A lot more to go.
Will be watching your build. Good luck.

Tim,
Glad to hear that you are a builder and took my suggestions with the intent they were made. The Royal P-38 is a plane that IMHO will never live up to your expectations. If you replaced all the wood and adopted modern design and building techniques you would have a more flyable airplane and would have spent a lot of time on a plane with OK flight performance.
As far as a first scale plane you can't go wrong with a Cub any size flies great the bigger the better.
The Pilot Decathlon would fly just as nice and it won't be a Cub. For various reasons I avoid building Cubs and Mustangs because invariably they will just be "another one"
You need to get your flying up to speed so to speak. wear out a few airplanes!
Glad to have you here on RCSB

Thanks Sparky,

Hellcat, the unsung HERO! Another favorite. In fact, all WWII birds are!
My grandpa worked on building the Grumman TBF Avenger, love to build a flying model of that some day.

Heavy metal! the Jug seems to be quite popular including ARF’s of the plane. Attributes include a big wing and wide landing gear.

Gary,

Where is he going to find an inexpensive "kit" of a reasonably sized Tri-Pacer?

There are several plans available but none of which are considered reasonably
sized. Keep in mind this is intended to be something to get back in the saddle
with while building the P-38.

Hey Guys

I do remember now building the Goldberg anniversary Cub for a former girlfriends brother. He wanted the clip wing version, put a K&B 60 in it. Not sure if ever flew it though, he never flew RC, I did recommend the full wing. I see the kit is still available. I just cant seem to get a large scale foamy ARF, old school I guess. I know my last local remaining hobby store has some balsa ARFS. He is closed, I don’t have to say why. Gary may remember Robins Hobbies in Glendale.
I do miss T&A Hobby Lobby here in Burbank. Smith Brothers another good shop in Reseda CA.
I’ll email these shops and see if they are shipping kits, its good to keep local shops in business.
I am anxious to get flying, I may check out Sepulveda Basin Field, heard they are still flying there.

Thanks for the inspiration

Tim
