Hello,
Posting from Burbank CA. I just picked up a vintage Royal P38 kit. Good time to start a new project. Looking for recommendations for a four stroke or brushless setup for this kit.

I’m just curious as to why didn’t the plans in the kit didn’t make any reference to at least the fuel-powered engine sizes & you could go from there.

I what should have said I just purchased a Royal P38 from eBay. Haven’t seen plans yet. The seller caller called out a 40 to 60 size two stroke, Which I assume came from plans. I like four strokes, but from reading some posts, this kit has a heavy wing loading from the get go. I believe electric is the way to go and keep the build light as possible. Being always a big fan of this plane from childhood and live in Burbank where Lockheed built this plane I’m excited about this build. The purchase price may have been high though, from photos, the kit looks it has been untouched. I did join the site and looking forward to the learning and sharing process of this build.

Will be following this. Picked up a partially built Royal P-38 at a Toledo show 2 years ago. Wing, cockpit pod and one boom pretty much done. Was thinking of going electric with mine. Good luck Tim

Welcome to the site. Small world. I used to live in the San Fernando Valley myself. I used to live in Sherman Oaks before moving to Reno, Nevada back in '91. I worked off of Pass Avenue in Burbank at a jet engine overhaul facility. It's since closed its doors.
Good idea on the choice of electric.
I love the P-38 also. Giant plane!!

It is a small world, I used to live in Sherman Oaks, Riverside and Coldwater across from Mrs Gooches. I built military grade microelectronics for various aircraft, some unknown to me. I also had a side job back then at Hobby Shack near Lake Balboa, I recall drooling over this kit on the self. Looking forward see this kit and plans to lighten her up.

My 3 cents worth...electric as an assurance this twin will not give up the ghost. These end up heavy with no
way to reduce weight so they require flying at a much higher than normal speed...about like the Marutaka
B-25. The most recent releases had urethane foam boom intakes. Plenty of room for batteries and motors.

Welcome to the site, I saw your first post and waited for others to chime in. I wonder what your modeling back ground is and how much flying experience you have.
The reason I ask is this is a very daunting build and will take a fair amount of sticktoit to complete. Then there is the flying part and the $ invested.....
I abandoned my build on this kit back in the 80's when it became obvious to me I didn't have what it takes.
Depending on how you answer the questions (introspectively) You can make some educated decisions about the likelyhood of successfully flying this plane.
Electric would be the only option, I would consider on this project.
Sorry to be a downer on this but there are other great options out there.
