Hello all,

My name is Tim Wirtz, but go by "the wirtzer" here.  I live in Minnesota and have been modeling since I was 12 - 38 years ago.....  I have built smaller scale projects before, mostly Japanese planes, and currently have a .60 size Kawasaki Hien, a .40 size Hien, a .30 size Zero and also a Kawanishi N1K1 on floats - that one is waiting to be built.  All of the above have been kit aircraft.  I've built several plans based planes but am now starting into large scale planes.  I lived in Japan for 9 years and always wanted a Kawasaki Ki-100.  Low and behold, a very well known and, sadly no longer with us, member - Meryln Graves, shared my love of this airplane.  It is with that in mind that I am gathering the plans, parts and materials to build one at the 110" size.  I'll start a build thread when I get everything together, which will take me a few months.  I may have a lot of questions for the group.  Mark Armbrust has already been very helpful.

Thanks for your help in advance

The Wirtzer

Tim,

Good evening and welcome to the group.  I take it by you: "...needing all of the materials,"  you mean more than just the hardware and woods.  I am interpreting that to mean reference sources as well as good drawings, photos, and paint colors.  I'll try contacting one of our fellow colleagues, Abuflector.  He also lives in Japan and is a professor of linguistics.  He's currently building a C.1 Albatros, but I'm sure he'll have much of the reference sources or at least guide you to them.

Sincerely,

Skye

Hi, Tim.  I am American but have been in Japan long-term, 20 years and counting.  I've always felt like I SHOULD model one of the Japanese aircraft, but since I'm strictly an early era modeler, there isn't much choice.

Lots and lots of books and photos available of the Kawasaki Ki-100.  I just did a search and came up with Merlyn's project.

Nice to meet you. I was there for 9 years. In and around Tokyo and on Izu-Oshima. I used to fly out in Tonosho, in Chiba. I used to go to the Aviation Museum in Tokyo. I got lots of info on the Ki100 there but am always looking for more. I love this plane. Not sure why. May I ask, what do you do in Japan?

Mustang22, I live in Minneapolis. I belong to th Twin City Radio Controllers Club.

Skyediamonds, thanks for the info. I am sourcing the materials now. I’m looking at who’s gear to get and what motor to use. I’ll probably follow what Merlyn did on his 110” pretty closely, though. I’ll probably start the build in August.

I think the cowl will probably be the biggest challenge for me. I’ve built a lot in wood but don’t have much experience in molding fiberglass, though I’ve ‘glassed models before as part of the finishing process.

As Gary mentioned I'm a professor of linguistics...though truth be told I mostly just teach English as a foreign language.  I'm tenured at a small university in Shikoku and will be hitting mandatory retire age (65) in four years.  Then it'll be back "home" to Southern Cal...where I haven't lived for nearly 40 years.
