Stan,

Vought designed the pancake~flapjack shaped aircraft in an effort to create a fast, highly maneuverable, yet slow take-
off and landing design capable of slow take-off and arrested landing on USN aircraft carriers. This, like many late WWII
development projects begun much earlier...were doomed to contract cancellation as jets were rapidly brought onboard.

Online resources state clearly issues with four bladed props developed explicitly for the XF5U caused unmanageable and
life threatening vibrations...reduced/resolved with installation of F4U-1 three bladed props as shown in my last photo post.

The yellow "smaller" Vought V-173 was a succeessful precursor development as a proof of concept. The V-173 is in the
Dallas, TX "Frontiers Of Flight" Aviation Museum.

The XF5U is said to have ROG'd on short hops down a runway but project was not completed due to contract cancellation.

"So Clue #3 was the pair of 4 blade props used on the F4u."

These ARE F4U-4 stock propeller blades, intended for taxi runs but NEVER as flying propellers.

Ed

"Online resources state clearly issues with four bladed props developed explicitly for the XF5U caused unmanageable and life threatening vibrations"

This is wrong. The vibrations were induced by the gearboxes and driveshafts, NOT the propellers.

"...reduced/resolved with installation of F4U-1 three bladed props as shown in my last photo post."

Wrong again. The photo you are talking about is the mock-up "dog and pony show" piece, not the final XF5U-1. There was NEVER any plan to employ 3 blades props. The cuffed wide chord blades shown in my second picture are THE PLAN.

This is a discussion of Jack Lynn Bale's plans and upgrades/enlargements for a percentage
of Jack's designs anticipated to be offered by MAC...

An attempt to give RCSB subscribers an opportunity to be contributors to MAC's product
offerings, options, and features has been successful.

Obviously, neither Sam nor I can build each of Jack's designs while moving forward with MAC.
We welcome scale modelers interested in constructing prototype models from Jack's plans we
provide in exchange for pics/video to post within the MAC website and promotions.

If sincerely interested...send your telephone # and email address to me in a PM.

When will the plans be available? Looking at DH 108, DH vampire. I wasn't aware that he had the F5F drawn

Hi Lenny,

The DH 108 Swallow plans should be available Saturday if Sam's week goes to schedule.

MAC has plans and vellum which have never been digitized. Traditionally the majority of
model plans have been produced through a process of Xerography, an optical process
resulting in percentages of distortion and enlarged line widths outward from the centers
of each plan sheet. While less expensive, it tends to distort plans incrementally.

You have seen me refer to this as copies of copies. You would be amazed when learning
of designers using Xerographic duplication of plans they sell, copying copies of copies.

MAC sells only "plotter printed" plans...with narrow line-widths to assure proper interlock
fit of laser cut parts.

Digitizing requires auditing each plan, inch by inch, to assure there are no faint, partial,
and, broken lines within each MAC plan cut path. Unless this is performed plans can not
be laser or CNC mill cut accurately. This is why MAC is initially selling laser cut kits of all
original size Jack Lynn Bale plans.
