I found out BIL was a member of Memphis Prop Busters, talked real high of the club to the Ms. I will ask for Jack.  Memphis Airport is S/SW from us 20~25 miles and we have a Navy base in millington N/NW 10~15 miles away.  We are in a flight line to Memphis.  FedEx uses it a lot.

Lakelandcat:

I’ve read all of the previous postings & Ed’s & Sparky’s & everyone else are true to their words.  If I may offer a recommendation to a person who buys estates & also has an enormous hobby shop in Rifle, CO, his name is Rickey Thomas.  His hobby store is two stories & has a huge inventory of everything pertaining to airplane models, covering (tissues, films, fabrics, etc.), radios, dopes, paints, wheels, accessories, kits (NIB’s as well as previously owned but never built, ARFs, RTFs,  & so much more.  Yes, for the benefit of our other members,  he also sells online.

I’ve purchased some of his previously owned kits & they’re complete as well as some of his accessories.  He doesn’t sell trash.  If interested, you could conceivably look him up or Google.

I only mentioned  his name should you decide to devote your time to other activities such as building models & traveling rather than being tied down with parceling out kits & parts of your BIL’s inventory.  Just sayin.’

Finally, I have the Proctor Jenny kit.  As Ed says, it requires patience.  Lots of patience.  It’s basically a kit for the more advanced modelers.  I’m only mentioning this aspect to hopefully shine some light that, from your own self-description, nothing was mentioned about your past experience in building a highly detailed (wooden) model.

This might be a project worth considering after a few builds ( years?) down the line.  Reason?  I know almost all of us has had some burnout at certain stages of the build & we pull ourselves away from the workbench to recharge.  Many times, people get discouraged or overwhelmed & never return or simply move on to the next modeling project that appears more realistically attainable & the original project ends up on the top shelf collecting dust or worst.

Hopefully this is not to be taken to discourage you from embarking on another venture or “hobby” of buying, swapping & selling.

Navy I think the club you speak of is the Barnstormers, I reached out to them first but found out there is a club just down the road that Barry was a member.  Obviously there is know way I can build all these planes and I really don't want to, I'm thinking on "cherry picking" some choice kits that I can work up to.  I'm a woodworker by trade and have a nice little shop but the wife and I are getting up in age and I have since retired.  I am excited about building planes my rc experience has been with cars. The longer I research Barry's "stash" the more impressed I have become. Not to sound cynical and I do respect people trying to get the best deal. I have no problem with giving a good deal but I also want to go into negotiations with some kind of clue as to what it's worth. I believe heading to this club down the road is my first move.  I can see keeping 4 to 5 plane Kits and ARFs, a Cub or 2(another ARF and one kit) One of the Pica T28B, 1 of the Phoenix Stenson Reliant's ARF, and finishing with the Proctor.  I realize these jewels take years to do right and half the fun is the journey.  I have learned enough over the last year to know I don't know, but I've enjoyed every minute. It's the small things that Barry has taught me like I wondered why he had so many WW11 books until I realized he needed them for reference. Same thing with why he had all the plastic models, he was getting ready to detail for his big builds. Figuring out what all the tools and jigs do.  About the only thing I can't find is a vac u form.. Thanks for responding, if you can clue me to how much some of these vintage kits are it sure would help.  Thanks Mike

Can't agree with you more.  Barry's wife SIL was ill for years and he couldn't leave her
alone so he spent his last years building and flying planes.  The Mrs. and I live a simple life she's a retired elementary school Librarian and we moved here to Memphis to take care of the family.  Her Mother lived here and her brother.  My Grandparents lived close so we knew it was time. That was 30 years ago.  Barry was the last family member on both sides. To put this estate in perspective Barry was the National Sales Mang. for DAP. He retired 3 years ago.  Wife would have to go over and watch SIL when Barry had to go to store, Doc, pharm. wanted to go play or just get away for a while.  He would go to Oshkosh every year for a week.  To say he was a hoarder isn't fair I think he was just board.  I spent the last year going through personal papers and finding where he had stashed things and flipping his house, it wasn't in bad shape just dated. I did all the work myself, paint sheetrock, tile, plumbing, electrical so yes I can get anal when I start a project. He had a extensive Camera collection but now I know he was just trying to get research pics. He was a VNV and one of his jobs was maintaining the guns on Puff. I'm a USAF Vet myself. I didn't know until I found a letter he wrote his father telling him the tracers looked like one solid line.  I also found his patch he was a flair flinger. Back on track, We will be EBaying for a while. We don't need the money it's more a break in the day.  Thanks for the response, I'll try to stay out of everyone hair but if yall need any thing like plans LMK I have yet to get into them but I have file cabnets full. I have enjoyed every moment discovering this hobby and now I have the time to explore. I have everything I need hundreds of props, tires, servos, controllers, balsa film, silks, tissue, paints, dope, glue, fuel, engines, gas, nitro, 2 stroke and 4 stroke, big, little, electric different sizes Bats. retracts, pilots, and all the hardware. He also had a extensive Flight Simulator collection.

Thanks Ed, Kingsport is some beautiful country, been through there and Houston also.  Barry wasn't hurting, he was the National sales Mang. for DAP (the caulk people) He did a stint in Nam as a gun mech. for the 47,  Puff.  If he wanted he bought two.  I have so many vintage kits I don't know where to start.  best one so far is the Proctor Curtiss JN4~D2 Jenny. Unreal kit. Mike

I have built three Jenny kits modifying one to Canada's Canuck (4 ailerons).  It is indeed a builders model.  Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about it.

BTW, the real one doesn't have ply sides behind the engine.  The model will fly fine without the ply sides by the cockpits.  Just make sure the cross bracing wires are functional in that area.
