Hi Folks, It's been a few years in the planning but I am finally into the final parts gathering stage for an 81" Brian Taylor Mosquito. This site seemed to have quite a few builds and a great deal of useful resources so I thought I'd sign up. I've been aeromodelling for almost 50 years if you count the Skeeter rubber-powered stick and sheet balsa free flight planes. But more like 40 in RC. Dad taught me the basics: balsa and tissue and dope, but I don't have a large number of scale builds behind me.
I am a member of WA Electric Flyers, based in Perth, Western Australia and while we mainly fly foamie parkflyers, the core membership, like me, remember the old days - while a couple of members are (unlike me!) fantastic scale modellers and a great source of advice.
I know the Mossie has a reputation as a builders design and I'm definitely feeling my inexperience when I read other threads. But I have build from plans plenty, and I've not seen anything on the plans that really baffles me. Still, I hope the hive mind here can set me straight before I make any terrible mistakes. I hope to do a build thread and complete the build in around 2 years. Pretty optimistic based on other's experience! Since getting back into RC modelling in my 40s, I've now almost mastered Fusion360, and my son is very good at designing and building his own 3D printed planes (he uses Blender). I plan to build the Mossie with a fair bit of contemporary technology to complement the core of what seems to be a great, light, scale design.
Anyway, I hope you will put up with me as I look to learn a lot along the journey and hopefully end up with a nice looking, nice flying example of one of my favourite aircraft. My grandfather was a cabinet maker, loved designing, building and competing with model yachts, and during the war, served in the RAF working on Mosquitos. I have a couple of pictures that he painted of them, but since he died in a motor bike accident when my father was 2, we don't know anything really beyond that about what he did on them.
Happy building and flying all. Kind regards, Tim
