Just joined this site.
Have some sport and sailplane experience. Active 1981 - 1992.
In 1987 I built a scratch model of a Zero only for my own enjoyment, but it did fly well.

Came back in 2008. Got some ARFs from My Father when he passed and away I went again.
Buying new radio and a hi-start with a Bird of time kit and building a copy of the Drifter II by Tom Williams from memory.

Became a scratch builder as there are so few kits being sold or offered for sale today!
Now near a decade later I see four sailplanes and three power planes.

A Goldberg Cub kit waits for me to apply the fabric covering
and a scratch built P-51B .60 size that is not as far along - only framed.

I don't consider either of these "scale" as the scale planes I have seen are far above what I am doing.
However I will make the Mustang to resemble Paul Mantz' Air Race aircraft.
Too many p-51Ds "out there" already.

This scratch build came about as I was frustrated as I couldn't afford a "Stang" kit @ 200 bucks.
Like most builders I have the materials stock piled for just such a time as this.

Drafted up some construction drawings and started cutting ribs and bulkheads.

FWIW: the fleet now includes the ARFs from my Pop (Tower 40, Schoolboy and a usta was electric junker that would never fly)
The BOT, Ken Bates Windlord, Lee Renaud's Sagitta 900 and a standard class sailplane of my own design.

Best Regards
Jim

Welcome Jim, I lived in Plainfield until the 2nd grade. My father used to fly at the local boys schools when we lived there. Make sure you get signed up with the site supporter status so you can share your builds with us.

Thanks for the invitation to be site-supporter.
However at the moment it is out of the question.

Retired fixed income.
Cannot afford that expenditure of $20.
Haven't even renewed AMA dues yet either.

I do comply with the safety code always though I fly in non-club environments,
out in the sticks by the good graces of farmers and the like.
Usually with one or two other people staring up at the thermal aircraft or flying the power 'planes.

I will consider contributing in Spring though.
AMA dues come first and not just for insurance but
in my opinion if we the modelers don't support a voice in the Beltway,
we all can expect to be OVER REGULATED AND UNDER REPRESENTED mixed in with drone abusers and such like.

Odd I started school in Largo Fla. and by grade 2 was back home in central Indiana.
I still hate the cold.
Not as much as I hate heating expenses in winter though.

At times I wish I had never stopped flying/building in 1992.
But then again it is the present as it is and the hobby still feeds my spirit as it did before.
Can't ask for much more than that.

Sparky,
Wow!

1981 at Batchelor school a Drifter II an up-start and a cheap dry cell 2 channel Sanwa radio is where it all started for me.
Didn't know anyone doing the RC thing then in B-gulch except a few also newbie friends also checking soaring out.
No instructor just the desire and success for thermals off the paved parking lot.

RCM told me what I needed to know to try!
I was hooked from that time until the Govt. made my gear illegal in 1992.

Doubt I would be allowed to fly at the school in this day and age, likely "security" fences in the way or close "development" of housing would stop the flying.
Sometime I'll have to drive down to the field on a Saturday, just to be around the activity.
Used to fly there once in a while as guest of the club...a flying buddy lived 15 miles north of the club field and was a member.

More I enjoyed watching folks do the pattern and racing planes that were way beyond my skill even then in the 1980s.
Other aspects of the RC aircraft spectrum I like learning about too.

Age dulled the ability and a slight stroke in 2008 didn't help, but I have fun and enjoy building as much as flying.
A good doc advised to find a hobby for health in "recovery".

Again I should never have given up flying and I should have come back before my Father passed away.

Those are the only regrets I have in the RC hobby.

 Jim

Holy Smokes folks,

After looking around here I am much intimidated by the quality of the work in various build threads.
Beautiful planes and craftsmanship.

Just consider me an apprentice here abouts. Teach me folks. I'll be silent and listen much.

Sincerely
Jim

Jim, I was just a slacker till I met these fellas. Now I try to better my craft as I go but still cant touch them, but I try. Just show us what your doing and you'll have all the help in the world.. Word of caution if I may but you'll only get 5 posts with out the 20 bucks I'm afraid.. I pay more that that for a magazine that doesn't do squat compared to this site. So now I got a T-shirt too. Welcome to the mad house.

Jim- Sparky and I along with Denny Friesel are active RCSB'ers- check out Denny's threads in the Ziroli forum- He is presently working on a skyraider and has done a Bates Wildcat and ziroli corsair thread also.  I have a thread under the "other kits" section that completed this year- "Lindbergh's Monocoupe".  Sparky is an active poster also.  There is an active scale family here in South Central Indiana- welcome, I would second Mark's comment about becoming a site supporter- you will gain a wealth of knowledge by posting your build on this site.  Welcome- Matt
