Good afternoon,

Am back in the hobby after a couple of decades away and can’t find a source for silk to cover my VK Models DR-1.   Sig is out and I don’t see any others.   Anyone know a good source?

Thanks!

I asked Sig a week ago by placing myself on their notify list.  A couple of days later they informed me they had silk.

Other than that there's a product called Chinese Silk.  Amazon along with a number of other places carry that one.  A good fabric store might also be an option.

Just found a bunch on Etsy.  I ordered some to try.  Here's the URL:

I've bought "habotai" silk from Dharma Trading.

Get 5MM (momme) white (or whatever color you wish) silk. I have used this size weave with great results. I bought a large amount from Thai Silks or sump’n like that.

It appears Abufletcher's source is the least expensive.

I ordered some Habotai white silk.   Thanks for the info.
Since it’s been a while, I’ll ask some technique questions.   I remember well how to prepare the wood, stretch it out without pulling the grain and dope the edges. But how about filling it in?   We used to brush 2-3 coats of Sig clear thinned at 25% and then a filler coat with sanding between each coat.   Is that still done or do people spray it now?

Some recommend first covering the model with tissue, then applying the silk over the tissue.  This is suppose to produce a stronger covering.

Oh, and I've also ordered from Thai Silk in the past.
