The Val is nearing completion.  Thought I'd drop a few shots of it.

Excellent looking model. Specs please: scale, span, weight, power. I have had 1/9th and 1/7th Vals and both flew great. Your bigger model should do even better.

1/6 scale, 94 inch span, Saito FG-60R3 radial for power.  Haven't put it on the scale yet.

Glad to hear your two birds flew well since I'm a bit concerned about the elliptical wing.  Used the original NACA airfoil, and modified camber and twist on the outboard panels as closely as I could understand its written description.  Risk of being a tip-staller if it's not right which could make for very nasty habits.

Elliptical wings are not known to have tip stall issues. If you are concerned about dropping a wing, raise the ailerons one or two turns on the clevis or program the radio to do that. Effectively putting a twist in the wing. Once you are comfortable you can take it out. As big of a wing as you have I doubt you will have any issues.
I can help you with the Saito if need be.

Interesting piece of history:  The original Val had "a wicked tendency to snap roll during sharp turns and loops... traced to wingtip stall".  Designers spent a year and a half flight testing the plane and reshaping the wing (with balsa wood - maybe they were modelers) in an attempt to solve the problem.  The wing used a NACA 23012 (15.5% thickness) at the root that originally blended down to 7% thickness, 2% camber and 1 1/2 degree of washout at the tip.  The engineers eventually changed the blend to 2 1/2% camber with 2 1/2 degrees of twist.  That's the camber and twist I built into the wing of this model.

I appreciate any advice with the Saito.  This is my first model with a 'gas' engine.  All my previous powered model experience has been with glow engines.  I designed the model around the Saito because it packaged so nicely.  Unfortunately, some on-line comments about it have expressed reliability problems.  Have your experiences with this engine been positive?

Great looking model is it your own design?
I built a skinny scale Val that was published in the March 2007 issue on Model Aviation here is a link to the artical:http://library.modelaviation.com/ma/2007/3/skinny-sc ale-world-war-ii-val-200703
I had no problems with the elliptical wing Tip stalling or any other bad habits. I used a NACA 2415 airfoil and the wing loading was very light. I think the light wing loading was the major factor in the planes behavior.

Yup, I drew this one up in 2018.  Wings and horizontal tail are built-up wood construction and everything else is molded glass.

Your Val looks like fun flyer.  Is it still flying?

A great looking model of a very interesting subject.  Those Japanese aircraft certainly had a character of their own.  Hope it all goes well.

An unreliable Saito?  I wouldn't pay any attention to the internet forums.  Just follow the manual.  I'd bet be pretty confident in betting that they just have it tuned poorly, or there is something dodgy in their setup external to the engine.
