I was on the trip to Top Gun with Dave Boddington and the Vimy. we think it was 1998 ish. Edit; apparently it was 1993!

He crashed it when an laser engine stopped because someone did not tighten the glow plug.............
A few sticks of balsa were purchased and it flew again in the contest.

As far as I know the model by Boddington has no vices and flies well. As did all Boddington's designs.

You can still buy the plan from

Dave was on a mission to correct the Smithsonian book of flight that had Charles Lindberg as the first to fly the Atlantic, He more or less built the Vimy just so that he could 'Mention'  it!

Allcock and Brown crated and shipped the new aircraft to Newfoundland and flew back, it was completely devoid of markings.

When David presented the model for static at Top Gun it caused consternation for lack of Markings. Quote judges

The last one shown at Joe Nall was the Passenger variant, and later developed into an aircraft named the Vickers Vitoria, first flown in 1922
Here are some photosof a few of the Vickers aircraft.

Good to see some models flying.

I have just about 50 detail photos of the actual Transatlantic Vimy and a few notes in a Ms Word format.

I am happy to share or,- if Mike would like to have them for one of the monthly walk arouinds I can send them to him.
 Let me know.
Alan

Alan,
You certainly possess a wealth of documentation. Envious. No doubt you must have a vast library of aircraft. Job well done.

Does anyone know if the Vimy is classified as a double-bay biplane? Or, if you include the struts holding the engines, a triple-bay?

As nobody has answer I will have a go......
I built a few DH Rapide s   . It has a engine braced to the fuselage by struts then a single outer strut braced by wires.
I was going to say it's a single bay but second thoughts, perhaps its a two bay
So that would make the Vimy a triple bay............

I read it like this:

Instead of "bay" think of "space". The "space" between the fuselage and the inter-plane struts.

I would say the DH Rapide is a 2 bay bi plane.

The Vimy a 3 bay biplane. The struts holding the engine nacelles are inter-plane struts too.

Inter-plane means "between planes". The wings.

Thanks Kuhn. It just seems to make sense. I’ve got the Boeing Model 80 on my bucket list for awhile. It won’t be built at least for a couple years to come, but the strut arrangement appears to be the same as the Vimy.
