I'm totally into building...but would never be without an ARF.  The ARF lets me fly NOW while I'd building.  If you haven't flown since 1985 I would also second the idea of getting a simulator such as Real Flite.  It'll shake the rust off and perhaps help you to avoid several costly mistakes as you re-learn to fly.

As far as getting back into building, I would again say buy yourself an ARF trainer, connect with a club and start flying ASAP.  And as you're doing that you can start building something more interesting than a trainer.  My attitude is that I don't want to waste precious building time on a trainer or fun-fly type model.  That's what ARFs are for.
