Mike,

Was there a chance to do any prictice rounds or non event flying.

I don't like going all that way for only 3 flights.

Yes.  Friday is set aside for static judging and practice flying.  I got there on Thursday

afternoon to set up and could have flown then as well.

Mike

Ed,
I won profile carrier (SR) in 71 at Glenview so we crossed paths back then. I think the Dauntless was 1971. The plane is now in the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola. I have seen it many times there, it's a bit long in the tooth and needs some sprucing up. I'm not sure it is still on display and just in the collection. I don't really have anything great to fly at the Nats and I share your frustration in distance traveled vs actual flights but I'm only three hours away from Muncie. I'm competing in pylon the week before.
Dave Wallick was one of the hot carrier pilots if I recall.
I retired from the Navy with 900+ carrier landings but I still remember my first in Glenview!

Tim,

Flew Navy Carrier at the nats from 1966 until 1971. Won class 1 and 2 several years as a jr and as a Sr. I had several CL 1 and 2 records as a JR and Sr. I won 4th, CL 2 as open in 71.

Ray Wilman from Belville IL (I think) was winning CL2 in open durring those years.

Was a great time for control line flying in the St Louis area. We had like 11 clubs and flew about 6 events each summer at Buder Park.

I would go up for the whole week (a kid) with friends and my dad would come up for the NC events held the last weekend.

I'm sure we crossed paths.

Navy Carroer locked in my desire to become an engineer. I remember at one of the events a Navy Officer was interviewing the NC winners and he asked me if I was going into the Navy; I was ROTC and had selected the Infantry. When I told him, I think he almost cried.

What was great about going for the whole week, I could help out at other events. Timed for free flight, helped at CL stunt, just a kid enjoying it all.

The loss of the Navy host at a naval station really hurt the impact of the event. Main rason is probably because the event rotated across the country.

Nats I attended: Glenview (2or 3?), Olatha, Las Angleas (Los Alimitos?), Reading-PA. Graduated and went on active duty in 72 and spent almost 4 years in Germany; US stopped sending combat troops to Vietnam in 72.

PS: Forgot to add I do remember Dave. Carrier flyers are the nicest guys.

Hi Ed,
My only recommendation for attending the NAT's is be sure and bring some food and drinks. I went there a couple of yeas ago and the food vendor did not show because he could make more money at some other event.
That's all I'm gonna say about that.

Hi Larry and Ed.

The AMA moved the NATS back a week this year to avoid the Ironman race which took up

most of the motel rooms in Muncie as well as the available food vendors.  I always bring

snacks and drinks to events, I guess those lessons learned in the Boy Scouts stuck.

As far as the weather goes, well its central Indiana in July and colud be really hot or

just right.  Last year it was a little windy Saturday afternoon and a little windier on

Sunday morning.  Had to chock up the Pup to keep it from running away.

Found a website that has average weather conditions for Muncie/central Indiana in July.
