Hope you are doing well this month and enjoying our great hobby. This month I wanted to reach out to our basic (free) members to try and explain why we have a subscription option and why it is so important to RCSB for them to subscribe.
Contrary to what most people think, the internet is not free. There are cost involved when hosting a high traffic site that include things like server fees, bandwidth usage charges, software licensing, etc. RCSB is not a site you can host on a $39.95 a month hosting plan. Our cost runs between $400 and $700 (depending on the amount of traffic) a month to keep the site up and running. Most sites offset this cost with many advertisers. Well I don’t know if you have looked around lately but the majority of scale r/c vendors that are still around and who are potential advertisers are mostly holding on by the skin of their teeth, or their margins are so narrow they just don’t have the funds to advertise. The majority of them are not big companies but small mom and pop operations mostly working out of their homes. With that said, we are lucky to have about a dozen vendors who support what we are doing and pay yearly advertising fees to have their banner ads displayed on RCSB but that revenue is a tiny fraction of what we need to operate.
This is why RCSB is mostly funded by a modest yearly subscription making our subscribing members the heartbeat of the site and heroes in my eyes.
