Just an idea that crossed my mind today:
I am working on the canopy for my FJ-1 Fury which has a WWII seat with steel back plate. There is a head rest attached to the plate and it was covered with black leather.
Shaping the round piece from a balsa block was easy but then, how to simulate the leather? After some contemplating I thought: how about Glad PRESS"NSEAL? The stuff sticks well to just about anything, so, why not balsa wood?
Well, it did. I put two layers, smoothed them on and tucked under the head rest. I then sprayed it with satin black from a rattle can, and, voilla: here it is.
