This must be a hard one.  I can't believe there hasn't been anyone guessing on it. Closest I could come up with is a p39 but it doesnt have a Royce engine and was used by more countries.

  • Rolls Royce piston engine powered.
  • Capable of long range flights.
  • Saw service with two countries.
  • Existed in both conventional (tail-dragger) and tricycle versions.
  • Entered service in very early 50's.  Last aircraft retired from operational service in 1991!

Keep posting more clues!
I think I know the answer but hope to get some others involved. I saw this airplane in Keflavik, Iceland as a kid when my dad was stationed there. I never remember seeing them flying in or out. I wish I had, the sound of all those engines and propellers must have been glorious. He was flying the Lockheed Constellation called the WV-2/EC-121, not saying the R-3350 with three PRT at full tilt wasn't too shabby either. I remember seeing the WV-2 taking off at night with blue flames from the exhaust and the glowing turbochargers!

Avro Shackleton it is, Woodlandbob.  You are up next.

The Shackeltons were British long-range maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) which were used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the South African Air Force (SAAF).  I used to see them operating out of the Port Elizabeth airport and found these pictures which I took back then.

The SAAF used the later MR3 version with nose wheel and "4 turning & 2 burning":  They had two Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbojet engines at the rear of the outboard engine nacelles to be used for assisted takeoff.
