Event Report – Madison County Dawn Patrol – Elwood Indiana June 9 & 10, 2023

As is typical of these types of events here in the Midwest, most folk start arriving mid-week, and when Helen and I arrived at the Madison County Dawn Patrol around 2:30pm Wednesday afternoon June 7th,. there were several flyers already here. So with help from CD Tamas Seres we got our RV and Trailer bedded down for the weekend, and started setup.

The Madison County RC Flyers home field in north-central Indiana is a very nice grass triangle field, bounded on either side by drainage ditches which converge at the north end of the field – the “West Drake Ditch” to the East and “Polley Walk” to the West, with the Pit Area making the base of the triangle. Located about an hour west of Muncie, Indiana, the surrounding area is farmland and wind farms.

Winds were brisk all afternoon, so everyone already arrived had been taking a leisurely start to getting airborne, but we did get the "Flags of the Great War" display up (and the flags were very energetic this afternoon/evening and in fact most every afternoon throughout the event).

One plane did take to the air in a nice gap in the winds Wednesday evening. Arthur Shelton tested his newly acquired BUSA 1/3 Nieuport 17 and got a nice flight in. Art acquired the Nieuport from “Mean Joe” Vermillion, who I believe had it built for him by Tim Schurick. Art had some dialing in to do (trim, throws and such), but he did a good job with it. As I noted on Facebook later in the event, it was great seeing Art Shelton with an Art Shelton style plane flying in Art Shelton style!!

Winds were forecast for MUCH better in the mornings, and with Canada sending us all that smoke, I was actually looking forward to seeing what the Dawns would look like this week!!!

Thursday morning came early – Dawn was just after 6:15am in Indiana this time of year. It was a fun day so far at the Madison County Dawn Patrol - albeit once again our friend the wind visited a Dawn Patrol in the afternoon.

Ron Pound did the honors of the Dawn Patrol Thursday morning with his 1/3 scale BUSA Fokker D.VII, followed by Arthur Shelton and the Nieuport 17. And I'll note that my own 1/3 BUSA Sopwith Pup did MUCH better with no crap in the carb and new fuel lines – I guess I’m just gonna have to embrace this whole “maintenance” thing . . .

Some spirited flying between the Eindeckers of Tim Schurick, David Marenberg and Kenneth Alcorn during the afternoon gusting conditions – all landed fine in the wind although Ken's Fokker upended when a cotter pin broke on a wheel (during taxi back – made finding the wheel REAL easy!!).

CD Tamas Seres got in a nice flight on his Austro-Hungarian Oeffag Albatros D.III, and also on his Balsa USA Airco DH.4 - up to the point where his spotters forgot to mention the wind direction change - he ended up none-the-worse for wear after using 100%plus of the available runway on his downwind landing, and DID manage to stay out of the West Drake Ditch (barely).

The Thursday evening Dusk Patrol at the Madison County Dawn Patrol, while breezy, and sometimes dramatic, nonetheless we got all planes back we launched.

Friday morning at Madison County. We had a nice Dawn Patrol at sunrise featuring Art Shelton’s Nieuport 17, Ron Pound’s Fokker D.VII and my Sopwith Pup, with photos by Bryan Baumer using my new camera (thanks, Bryan!!).

Later on the Friday winds picked up (go figure), with mostly crosswind and at times gusting hard, but that didn’t stop Ken Alcorn and David Marenberg getting in Fokker D.VII flights.

Eindeckers were abundant at the Madison County Dawn Patrol, so a lineup photo was mandatory.  RC Scalebuilder fans will recognize several of these from Tamas Seres build thread up in the Balsa USA section!!

One plane unfortunately came to grief on Friday - Bryan Baumer's 1/4 BUSA Fokker D.VII was badly damaged during a deadstick landing attempt. Damage is substantial, but he is planning to rebuild it.
