I haven't been to this event since it's inauguration years ago and it did not disappoint. RickJ had offered me a chance to fly his 1/3rd scale pup if I showed up. This was great incentive to say the least, so 5am Saturday I left home for the 3 hour drive to Dayton. The bad news was, about an hour in to the drive I realized I left my good camera sitting in the garage as I was loading the truck. My iPhone was all I had so I hope you guys enjoy the photos. The turn out was phenomenal despite the low 60s and wind. There were around 10-15 full scale replicas and around 40-50 models. The crowd was steady all day and very enthusiastic.

I've been to a lot of R/C shows over the years and I have to say the quality of models was outstanding...several being museum worthy and flown. The full scale guys and the R/C modelers each took turns with the airspace and there was rarely a lull in the flying activities. Around 6 R/Cs were in the air at once and the "air traffic controller" did a great job of coordinating take offs and landings. Everyone established a nice race track pattern and had great communication between pilots.

There were a couple stand out moments when the owner of a full scale DR. 1 ran his rotatory engine, and another that was mounted to a test stand was run several times. The smell of castor oil was everywhere :)

Full scale Spad with an opposed engine

Rick's beautiful Pup...what a sweet flying airplane

More to come!

Some more photos...

Some of the 'stand off scale' WWI replicas

This airplane probably deserves it's own thread...but it is full scale with a rotary

I didn't notice the pilot until I processed the photos later...pretty cool

Rick, Rich and I out on the flight line

More to come

One more, I apologize for the poor in flight photos, my antique iPhone isn't quite up to speed.

and a trip to Dayon isn't complete until you visit these guys...the cemetery is only about 15 minutes from Wright Field

Here are some more: (Please correct any errors)

Doc (Geezer) and his N.28

1/2 scale DrI

Doc S N.28

View of the flightline from the pits.

Jim Suchy's Gotha GiV

Greg Hahn's Caproni Ca.3

Flight line.

Coming out to play!

There were a couple of large tents to store planes overnight.  My 1/4 scale Camel, large at my field, is by far the smallest here. (I hope to compensate my feelings of inadequacy with my 1/3 Thomas Morse build!)
