I really enjoyed the 1/4 scale BUSA version and wanted one in 1/3 scale to take to dawn patrol events where most of the planes now are 1/3 scale. Besides, the 1/3 scale planes seem to fly in a much more realistic manner than 1/4 scale ones.

I designed and built it from enlarged 5-view drawings from the Osprey SPAD Aces book. Power is a direct drive G-62 with a 24-10 prop which seems to be a good combo for this plane. Weight is about 35#. It was successfully test flown at the Hoosier Dawn Patrol in Muncie, Indiana and I put seven more flights on it that weekend. There were a few minor issues to deal with between flights but those were resolved pretty easily. I was even confident enough with it to fly it in the sundown gaggle on Saturday!  There are still a few more details to add to it.

Jim

Super job. What did you for the cowling/louvers? Wish someone would kit a 1/3 scale.

Thanks, guys. I made the cowl by first carving one from foam and then making a mold. Then I laid it up with fiberglass. The louvers are poured resin pieces and applied one at a time.

There is definitely a lack of plans for this plane at 1/3 scale. I'm thinking of drawing up a proper set of plans this winter...we'll see. At first I was going to just blow up the BUSA plans but then decided I wanted to make one with a more accurate outline. The airfoil is a little thicker than scale and the fittings are not true scale but I'm happy with the way it looks anyway.

Jim

She is a show stopper Jim

Ever thought while building to use a reduction gear unit to turn a nice scale size prop?
