While cleaning out the garage, I found a couple old cane fishing poles. A perfect fit for the rear booms. 1/4 scale, George Marsden plans. Looks like a lot of fittings and silver soldering.

Wow, I love that plane! Looks to be way over my head as far as construction goes. I would love to see a build thread on this one, lots to learn. I see that plans are still available too. What will you power it with?

Dennis

Why is it called a "headless" pusher?

There have been a replica or two haven't there, are you going to do an original, or an existing subject.

Dennis,  The plans call for a 120. Having built the Avro D from Marsden's plans which also called for a 120 and I ended up with a Laser 180 in it. I'll probably go with a Laser 150 or 180. Both aircraft are about the same size and have lots of drag.

Richard,  The early pushers had a second elevator mounted on bamboo booms out in front of the pilot. During a flight, a pusher hit a fence breaking off the front elevator. The pilot took off without the front elevator and discovered the aircraft flew much better without the front elevator. The pushers manufactured after that were built without the forward elevator and they were called "Headless".

I was thinking about modeling it after the one called "Sweetheart" in the EAA Museum.

Just curious, how detailed are the plans in regards to all the rigging and fittings? Are the rigging attachments just cut out of aluminum sheeting and then drilled/formed? A fascinating subject. I will be watching this thread with great interest,
Dennis

Dennis,

The plans are well detailed regarding fittings and rigging. Any fittings that are soldered are shown as brass sheet & tubing. I plan on going with stainless sheet and thin wall stainless tubing which won't melt being silver soldered.

The Marsden plans are from Scale Plans and Photo Service. www.scaleplansusa.com
