I didn't see mention of 'Geo-Tex' - an Asphalt underlayment fabric. Pretty popular here as grass doesn't grow without a huge water bill (plus we'd actually need plumbing on site).

Asphalt is my option for gas/glow.

Water would be my other 'other' choice. Can't wait to finish the PBY5A Canso

& cut VERY short.

Most of my asphalt flying has been with trike geared jets, no excuses

for bad take offs or landings but not very forgiving on wing tips!

In contrast to Boomerang and Dragon Slayer, our field is basically a well manicured paddock. Strathalbyn is about 50 km from Adelaide. Some grass (and weeds) in the wetter months, but mainly dry grass and dirt during the long hot, dry summers here in South Australia. It's a bit rough and bumpy for small planes (e.g. foamies), but it doesn't matter for larger planes (>4kg). Bob the Mower keeps it well mowed, so it's never been an issue for me or most members.

We're laying down some astro turf this year. Picked it up from a bowling green at a retirement home. Anyone have experience using astro turf as a runway? Thanks.

My flying site uses a 12' wide by I forget how long Synthetic conveyor belt that was donated to us by a paper mill that had closed down. The mill purchased the belt new, but never installed it. The original price tag was still in the box when we got it. It was over $10,000 dollars. It is stretched out over a compacted base with all the edges buried in the ground. I like flying off it, but it is only slightly less forgiving that concrete.

Since I posted back in 2011 we have added GeoTex so out runway is 75'X800 grass with a 30'X150' GeoTex in the center. It has held up well the mower tore up one end a little but it was repaired just.
I was initially against putting the Tex down but I have been proven wrong.
It's the best of both worlds.

Hi all.
Always flew off grass but the surface in the past was not ideal for larger scale retract equipped models. However a chance to join another club has given a better positive experience.
The main reason for this post is a security warning. The field is straight off a road and the the mowing equipment was kept in a shipping container just inside a padlocked (in a surrounding box) steel farm type gate. You probably guessed it by now, we had a visit. The gate and its attached post was lifted clear with the use of heavy machinery which was also used to force open the container door and the mowers taken. The club now has the added expense of contract mowing
as replacement would be pointless. The smaller all steel field clubhouse has also been broken into, object of exercise one 12 volt car battery.
